Opening Day, 1947

This photograph was taken during Jackie Robinson's first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947, when he became the first African American player in Major League Baseball. During the 1947 season, Robinson went on to bat .297, score 125 runs, steal 29 bases and be named Rookie of the Year.

On display in the Smithsonian.  In 1997, Major League Baseball retired his uniform No. 42 across all major league teams; he was the first professional athlete in any sport to be so honored.
